L 18 - Presentation Skills (1) Essays - Attitude Change, Free Essays
L 18 - Presentation Skills (1) Essays - Attitude Change, Free Essays L 18 - Presentation Skills (1) In academic culture, you need to express your views clearly on different issues relating to your subject area. These views are often based on a critical reading and evaluation of written texts. It is also important that you develop the language skills that will enable you to express your ideas most effectively. Preparing and planning a presentation There are a number of different situations in which you will need to communicate orally in English in your academic courses. The main situations are presentations, seminars and discussions. In some cases, you will give a short presentation about a topic in order to lead into a discussion. In other cases, you will present information or a summary of a text. In future situations, you may be giving a presentation based on your own work or research. Below is a list of suggestions you may find helpful. Stage 1: Find out what you need to do Make sure you know exactly what the topic is or, if you are choosing your own topic, what is expected of you. Check how long you have for the presentation. Think about your audience. How much are they likely to know about the topic? How much will you need to explain? If the presentation is being assessed, make sure you know what the criteria are. 491241730416500 Stage 2: Brainstorm ideas Task 1 - Arrange the following sentences in the correct order. ________ ________ ________ ________ Explain your ideas to a friend - this will help you to clarify them. Look at your list of ideas - what connections can you see between them? Are there particular ideas you could develop that would be of interest to your audience? Decide which ideas to use. Can each one be summarized in one sentence? If not, perhaps your ideas are not dear and specific enough. Make a list of anything you can think of related to your topic; you will not use all of these ideas, but will choose from them later. Stage 3: Do any necessary research Determine if there are any ideas about which you need to get more information. Gather any evidence you need to support your ideas, e.g., statistics. Think about how much information you can realistically convey to your audience. Keep your audience in mind, especially in relation to their level of relevant expertise. Stage 4: Organize your ideas Decide which point you should begin with. Think about how you can link one idea to the next. Do not include too much information - you want your audience to understand your key points clearly. Decide how you will begin and end your presentation. In the introduction you want to get the attention of the audience. The conclusion is the last part of your presentation, and probably what the audience will most remember. Prepare your PowerPoint slides or other visual aids. Remember: less is more '. Think of the key words you will use and check your pronunciation - there is nothing worse than listening to a presentation in which the presenter pronounces the title of the presentation incorrectly! Task 2 You are going to watch a youtube video entitled " What is a good academic presentation? Examination of The Little Matchstick Girl
Examination of The Little Matchstick Girl First published in 1845, The Little Match Girl byà Hans Christian Andersonà is a story about a young impoverished girl trying to sell matches on the street on New Years Eve who is afraid to go home without selling enough for fear of an abusive father. This tragic short story paints a dismal picture of life for the poor in the 1840s but also carries with it that grim hope of a fairy tale with visions of huge Christmas trees and shooting stars appearing before the young match girl- her dying wishes and dreams. The Harsh Realities of Poverty Andersons The Little Match Girl is not far from classic fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm- they both share a certain darkness to their content, a melancholic and an often morbid obsession with consequences for actions or for merely existing. Its an often studied piece in academic circles. In The Little Match Girl, Andersons titular character dies by the end of the piece, but the story is much more about the perseverance of hope. In these sparse, unforgiving lines, Hans Christian Andersen packs so much simple beauty and hope: The girl is cold, barefoot, and poor- without a friend in the world (it seems)- but she is not without hope. She dreams of warmth and light, of a time when she will be surrounded by love, and filled with happiness. Its so far outside of the realm of her current experience that most of us would have long since given up such dreams, but she holds on. Still, the harsh realities of poverty haunt the little girls reality- she must sell a match for fear of being beaten by her father upon returning home and this fear propels her to stay outside all night, which ultimately leads to her death by hypothermia. Lessons and Adaptations Thanks to its brevity and delicate approach to the topic of death, The Little Match Girl serves as a great tool, like most fairy tales, to teach children important lessons about the tougher topics in life like death and loss as well as social issues like poverty and charity. We may not want to think about the horrible things that happen every day, and its certainly hard to explain such things to our children. It does seem, though, that we can often learn the greatest lessons from the children- in how they deal with the most hopeless situations. In those final moments, this little girl sees visions of splendor. She sees hope. But, her passing- punctuated by the shooting of a star in the night sky- is tragic and troubling. Fortunately, there have also been many adaptations of this short piece by Hans Christian Anderson including several animated and live action short films which provide an easier way for children to access the themes of this brilliant short work of fiction.

National Hockey Leagues Advertising Campaign Assignment - 1
National Hockey Leagues Advertising Campaign - Assignment Example Beginning with the hegemonic masculinity, the paper further refers to Conellââ¬â¢s definition of hegemonic masculinity, as a dominance of ruling class, depicted by its control over the sports institutions and media. However, the author of this paper has defined the masculine hegemony, in the context of gender participation in hockey. Accordingly, the campaign is about the dominance of men in sports, projecting women in a subordinated role. Exploring the creation and development of ââ¬Å"inside the Warriorââ¬â¢ theme, the author refers to the NHLââ¬â¢s 2004-2005 lockout season, which resulted in the re-launch of new professional entertainment product, ice hockey. The marketing techniques involved the use of Chinese philosophy and inclusion of female voice. The lockout season was the result of the hockey being transformed from a small game to big business that involved inflated payouts to the players. The resulting declines in the revenues of NHL prompted the league to formalize salary cap and finally the re-branding exercise. In the second part of the paper, the author refers to promotional strategies adopted by the theme conductors. According to the President of Conductor, Tom Cotton, the campaign had a mix of eastern and western strategies, with proverbial reference from China. Tom refers to the campaign as the product of one script, which was part of the content that could be developed into a multi-channel media plan. The first thing that strikes the mind is the use of the word, ââ¬â¢masculinityââ¬â¢ in the advertising campaign, which is being discussed in this article. There is every indication that the campaign has a gender bias, as it depicts the male superiority in the field of hockey. The author does not provide any research material, which could support the presentation of such bias. Even the fans and other participating personalities in the campaign belong to the male species only.

Change Management and Information Technologies Coursework
Change Management and Information Technologies - Coursework Example Change management is of paramount concern within companies, especially in the modern day when changes occur so rapidly and with apparently increasing frequency. The effects on employees must be taken into account when considering these changes. It can be seen as a fulcrum around which many of the great advantages and yet also the challenges of IT revolve. Employees may be empowered to perform new tasks in a much easier manner, and yet may also become disillusioned as they feel they are even more simply a cog within a machine than they were before. While the minutia of instituting change within IT often revolves around practical problems such as software implementation and training of employees, it is just as important to consider the wider implications such as the effect upon the company culture and employee morale of the new technology. These are not peripheral concerns: they are central to the performance of employees and thus the overall success of the company. This analysis will consider how can a manager make sense of the numerous different models and the complexity of the changes that will occur with technological advancements. This has been a central role within business studies for a number of years. The manager needs to be able to consider ahead of time the likely consequences upon both the overall company and specifically upon employee performance before the IT change has occurred. In many ways the culture of the company is most important. A corporate culture can be defined in a number of ways. But in general it consists of a disparate number of forces at work within a company. These include everything from beliefs to systems to the company history to the overall attitude of employees. This might seem overly complex and amorphous for actual practical use, so various attempts have been made to systemize the analysis of corporate culture. One powerful method is through the cultural web. The cultural web is a means of investigating and revealing the culture of an organization. It represents how culture is expressed and how it manifests itself: A Cultural Web The central area of the Venn diagram that represents the cultural web is where the paradigm of change occurs. The manager must view this paradigm within the complexity of the web that has been produced by the various factors that go into the individual sectors:- such as "stories", "power", "symbols", and "routines/rituals". All of these are what make up the culture of a company, and, as can be seen from a cursory glance, they are all 'human' variables that will be held within the general culture of the company. Thus the manager needs to consider how the changes being considered will effect this culture and how, perhaps more importantly, the culture will influence them. This can be related to Baloqun's initial idea of considering the context-specific situation that occurs within a company. The change plan must be made to at least fit reasonably easily within the culture that already exists within the company rather than forcing a radical change within that culture. It is clear that sometimes a radical change in corporate culture is needed (Enron might have benefited from such a change before

Is America Still The Greatest Nation Politics Essay
Is America Still The Greatest Nation Politics Essay The United States is unquestionably the strongest military and economic power in the world today, but other great empires have crumbled and America will suffer the same fate if even its own citizens and its friends around the world ever lose faith that America acts in the name of liberty, for the sake of democracy. What does this statement mean? The author of this statement was trying to express that no matter how great a nation is, if the citizens of the nation and other nations began to lose faith, then the nation could eventually fail as others have in the past. No matter what the nations moral or ethical makeup is, without individuals willing to stand up and defend it there will be no nation. This does not always mean military actions it also includes global economic stabilities and global partners that are willing to back a nation up during all phases good or bad. Is the world stage losing faith in American acts? Some may argue all you need to do is look at the way America uses the military to force our ways on other countries (i.e. Iraq or Korean War), or the way we are currently dealing with our own fiscal issues. America is one of the biggest nations in the world and we do have a large presence in the world community. One of the best examples of our presence would be that of our military. The Pentagon currently owns or rents 702 overseas bases in about 130 countries and has another 6,000 bases in the United States and its territories (Johnson). Even with this massive presence overseas it doesnt make us immune. The greatest example would be 9-11 and the flack we caught when invading Iraq. I remember after 9-11 happened may were in arms for getting even with the individuals that did this to America, but when President Bush decided to invade Iraq some attitude changed. People both globally and here at home began having doubt in the American go vernment. The American economy also has caused doubts not only across the nation but also world, a perfect example would be the credit downgrade that America received. [The] credit agency Standard Poors lowered the nations AAA rating for the first time since granting it in 1917à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦one notch to AA-plus (Foxnews). This credit rating drop changed many views on America and made many wonder what would the government do to fix the issue. Throughout the 20th century America has found itself in several challenges to overcome, both at home and overseas. Two examples of how America has strong backing would be during the Great Depression and World War II. One of the biggest challenges it had to overcome was the Great Depression, it was an easy time for Americans to give up, but they didnt. The government had to step in and help restart the economy and it took several years to bounce back. Without handwork and strong support from the people, even though struggles, America may not have been able to recover. Another great challenge that America had to endure was World War II. Once Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, America had to face a great war on two different fronts, the Pacific and European wars. As the war progressed women had to replace men, who went to war, in factories. The American people were also called to help support the war by selling war bonds to raise money for war efforts. This along with rationing of precious go ods such as gas, tires, sugar, coffee, meat, butter, alcohol (Ayers 687) showed support from the American people. A great example of America not having support from home or overseas would be the Iraq War. After 9-11, President Bush was able to get the Patriot Act passed which gave broad powers to combat terrorism (Ayers 874). The President saw a threat in Iraq and wanted to make sure that the American people were going to be safe. After not receiving very little support from the United Nations in the decision to attack, he decided to take action. After the initial shock and awe the resentment began to grow from within the United States and around the world. Looking back on the 20th century and the present day, I do believe that America still has a strong presence in the world. One of Americas biggest strengths is the military. As stated earlier we have strong overseas presence both on land and sea. We have numerous bases overseas, in Japan and Europe, and with the greatest Navy in the world we can be off a countrys coastline within a few days ready to drop bombs if needed. Our economy, even with the tough times we are going though, still is able to produce more goods and services than most of the world. Prices throughout the world still use the U.S. dollar as the standard currency to base prices on. Most countries, including the ones that despise Americans, either follow our culture or try to copy what we are doing. They follow our music, movies, celebrities, and even wanting our freedoms. Though my experiences of traveling the world, when I was in the military, no matter what culture you find yourself in there is some type of American influence that can be found. This is why I believe that American still hold a strong stance in the world community. In my personal opinion, I dont think Americans are losing faith in America, I think we (as a whole) are losing faith in the government. The decisions that law makers are currently making to balance the budget has been a fight thats been going on for years. Most of the individuals I talk to feel that instead of trying to fix the problem at hand, the government tries to make due on campaign promises and kick the problem down the road. Several issues such as jobs being sent overseas (to places like China and Korea), the military budget, they fiscal cliff, and entitlements are causing Americans to lose faith in the way the government to trying to control the spending. If we as a country, both government and the civilian population, are unable to control the debt and get ourselves back to a fiscal economy the we will lose our place as an economic power. There are other countries that are building up and are ready to take over as the strongest nation, both economically and militarily, i.e. China. This could take several years to accomplish but if things dont change it could be reality. History shows that if we as American people are willing to stand up for the founding principles that out forefather stated, then the American dream can still survive. If we currently continue down the path we are on we could become a second rate in the world as a whole. Even if this takes place and the world looks at us differently down the road, I still believe that Americans as a whole will not lose faith and will continue to fight for what America stands for.

ââ¬ÅOf Mice and Menââ¬Â during the 1930ââ¬â¢s Essay
John Steinbeck wrote ââ¬Å"Of Mice and Menâ⬠during the 1930ââ¬â¢s when the Great Depression wouldââ¬â¢ve started. The dustbowl was wiping off all the good soil so all the farmers lost there jobs and they lost all their money. Also loads of people lost money in the Wall Street Crash when the stock market crashed. Many men had the dream like George and Lennie and work like them so they can get their fifty bucks or work up a stake to buy some land of their own. Many people were racist so Crooks had a very hard life even though he had nothing different about him but his skin colour. Also he is a cripple so he canââ¬â¢t do too much work except tend the horses. Candy is a bit the same because he has a busted hand and got a bit of compensation but nobody else would employ him so he has to stay there. Lennie is really dumb and even though he is strong no one would employ him because of his intelligence. He is lucky that he has George because it was George that would have probably got him the job. George is a very intelligent person who is a hard worker but can never live the life he wants to because Lennie keeps ruining it. Slim is a very good worker and is very efficient and is essential to the ranch. He is the only one who can speak to Curleyââ¬â¢s wife and get away with it. ââ¬Å"This is just a nigger talkingââ¬â¢, and a busted back nigger. So it donââ¬â¢t mean nothing, see?â⬠this shows how disrespectful Curleyââ¬â¢s wife and other people can be to Crooks. Crooks are portrayed in the book as a black, enabled person who is beaten and tortured for fun. He has only a few human rights like being able to live and do what he wants to a certain extent but is beaten by the boss when itââ¬â¢s not even his fought and he is used for games. Just like when they set dogs on a bear even though the bear is chained up, one of the workers will have his hands or legs tied together so that poor old Crooks has a chance. Crooks is always mentioned by the Boss and the workers as the nigger, a bit like an animal, like you call a dog, dog when talking about it, they do the same to Crooks. They treat him like an animal. Smitty was the guy that had the fight with Crooks but lost. He said ââ¬Å"If he coulda used his feet, Smitty says he woulda got the niggerâ⬠which proves the point that he was treated like a game. Crooks will never fit in the 1930ââ¬â¢s because of all the racism with the KKK. He is also enabled so he has got two main problems with him that is why he is pushed around and beaten. Crooks is placed in the novel by Steinbeck to show another aspect of how not being strong, young, male and intelligent can cause loneliness and discrepancy about whether they can really enjoy themselves without a little bit of help. Crooks donââ¬â¢t like white folk as we see when Lennie goes into his room. He says ââ¬Å"You got no right coming into my roomâ⬠Crooks tries to get back at Lennie for him not being able to go into the Bunkhouse. He wants to make Lennie feel left out by saying things like ââ¬Å"Sometimes he talks, and you donââ¬â¢t know what the hell heââ¬â¢s talkinââ¬â¢ about?â⬠shows this in a way that Lennie doesnââ¬â¢t understand. Lennie is probably cautious of that because itââ¬â¢s true, he then tries to scare Lennie by saying ââ¬Å"What would you do if George donââ¬â¢t come back tonight?â⬠and Lennie gets all worried and scared. In the end Crooks stops doing it because he wants someone to talk to. He tries to act normal but his anger is let out he complains how ââ¬Å"Books donââ¬â¢t keep a man company. They gotta have a person to talk to or they will go madâ⬠shows this, he canââ¬â¢t control himself. He portrays a lonely man with no friends or anyone to talk to and it isnââ¬â¢t his thought. He is like an untouchable. The other characters in the book which are marginalized are people like Lennie, Curleyââ¬â¢s wife and Candy. Lennie is marginalized because even though he is young and strong he is so dumb. People realize heââ¬â¢s so dumb they even play tricks on him, like when George is talking to Slim he says ââ¬Å"He was so dumb one time I told him to jump into the water, he jusââ¬â¢ jumped and when we pulled him out he was so God damn grateful he was being all kind againâ⬠proves this, Lennie being so dumb must make it hard for George or anybody to have a real conversation with. Candy is left aside because he is unable to work properly because of an accident when he got his hand caught in a machine. Even though his $250 compensation he canââ¬â¢t move on with his life or move away so he has to stay at the ranch. You can tell that heââ¬â¢s lonely because when he over hears Lennie and George talking about their special little place their getting he jumps at the opportunity and says ââ¬Å"How much do they want for that place?â⬠shows that Candy is very interested in the farm. He even offers them every last cent he has to go with them and his will, will be left to them. He says he canââ¬â¢t wait and is thoroughly excited. He is just a useless old man, just like his dog a waste of space but seems very wise because he tells George and Lennie how he can cook, clean and wash and even tend chickens so he advertises himself as a slave just to get out of the ranch. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife doesnââ¬â¢t fit in with everybody else because of her sex. There are no other women on the ranch so she has no one to talk to when all the men go out to work. This is why she always tarts herself. She just wants to be noticed a lot of the men say ââ¬Å"You have Curley to talk toâ⬠but she just replies ââ¬Å"all Curley talks about is how heââ¬â¢s gonna get some guy and lead with his leftâ⬠so she shows that marrying Curley was a big mistake. She must have been drunk or just been let down and grabbed whatever she could. You can tell she is lonely because of the way she always asks ââ¬Å"Have you seen Curley?â⬠and trying to get noticed. She is a perfect example of Steinbeck using her character to show loneliness when she says ââ¬Å"Standing here with a bunch of Bindle stiffsâ⬠and then says ââ¬Å"and likinâ⬠shows that she shouldnââ¬â¢t really have to stay there and talk to them because she is young and beautiful but because she is a woman she canââ¬â¢t go out with the men. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is very different from many other people and the opposite to Curley because she wants to be Lennieââ¬â¢s friend. None of the other men implied that they donââ¬â¢t want to be friends with Lennie but you donââ¬â¢t hear in the book many other people talking to him except for George. This is because Curleyââ¬â¢s wife knows that Lennie is interested in her because when they first met he ââ¬Å"wouldnââ¬â¢t move his eyes away from herâ⬠and unbeknown to Curleyââ¬â¢s wife Lennie says ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s Purdyâ⬠and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife tries to exploit this feeling by saying hello to him every time she sees him and lets Lennie stroke her hair not realising that it would cause her death. In the book Steinbeck makes most of the characters that do have the characteristics of being young, white, male and strong to succeed in the world like George and Slim. This because Steinbeck wanted to show the World that anyone not in that category would not survive like Lennie and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife. He believed that this was realistic and that his book could have been a true story. George and Slim, these type of people would have survived because of the fact that they would have become so vital to the ranch, Slim already has. George will definitely become like slim because he is a good worker; he is strong, white and male but is also very intelligent so he knows where to be careful. You can tell that Slim is vital because Candy says ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s been giving him the eyeâ⬠and then says ââ¬Å"if anyone can mess with Curleyââ¬â¢s wife its Slim because heââ¬â¢s so damn good at his jobâ⬠which shows that any other person messing with Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, Curl ey would try to pick a fight with but he knows that the boss wont like that because of how essential he is to the ranch. George will become this way unless he moves because he has already shown a lot of his intelligence by saying to Lennie ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t say anythingâ⬠and how he explains to the boss when they first meet ââ¬Å"He isnââ¬â¢t the smartest guy but he can sure back a packet of Barley quickâ⬠showing that he tells the boss about Lennieââ¬â¢s bad points but then over emphasized about his good points. He is also very smart right at the start when he says ââ¬Å"Were gonna sleep here because I got a reasonâ⬠and the reason is because he knows that if he goes tonight heââ¬â¢ll have to get up tomorrow and go to work when he can just stay here. Lennie doesnââ¬â¢t realise this and asks why. George knows better than to tell him the truth because he knows that Lennie might let it slip to the boss and he doesnââ¬â¢t want that so he says ââ¬Å"I just like this spotâ⬠and Lennie doesnââ¬â¢t seem to care and just carries on getting fire work. To conclude this essay Crooks was placed in the book to show how bad racism is and to show how he was treated. Lennie, Candy and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife are put in to show that if youââ¬â¢re not white, male, intelligent and strong you wonââ¬â¢t be able to survive. Lennie got killed by George, Candy will die shortly because of his age but Crooks he will survive but with a wretched life of racism and it probably will not get any better in his life. The people that do survive are characters like Slim and George and they survive because they are fit into the elite category of being string, intelligent, white and male. Soon George will become indispensable to the Ranch just like Slim who ââ¬Å"Is so God damn good at his jobâ⬠unless of course they want to move, but where ever those two go, they will become very good at what they do. Georgeââ¬â¢s whole life awaits him now because he hasnââ¬â¢t got Lennie to mess up things and can do what he wants like he says ââ¬Å"I could go into town and buy a gallon of whisky and sit and play pool or visit a whore house. But Iââ¬â¢m stuck with youâ⬠so really he should do a lot better without Lennie.
